Rhode Island Monthly recently voted this store and its "Book-Loving Staff" as the
B E S T of RHODE ISLAND This is what they had to say about us:
"In a sea of chain stores, this neighborhood fixture shines like a beacon. Shines so brightly, in fact, that even some Providencians shop here for their next read.
Everything you can get at Borders you can get here: the latest bestsellers, how-to-tomes, magazines from the trendy to the obscure, new literature by up-and-coming authors, book signings, readings and storytellers. You'll also find something often missing at big-box bookstores: friendly, knowledgeable service from enthusiastic bibliophiles. Out first stop is always the staff pick's shelf, and we never come away empty-handed."

Comfort: A Journey Through Grief
by
Hood, Ann
In 2002, Ann Hood's five-year-old daughter Grace died suddenly from a virulent form of strep throat. Stunned and devastated, the family searched for comfort in a time when none seemed possible. Hood-an accomplished novelist-was unable to read or write. She could only reflect on her lost daughter-"the way she looked splashing in the bathtub ... the way we sang 'Eight Days a Week.'" One day, a friend suggested she learn to knit. Knitting soothed her and gave her something to do. Eventually, she began to read and write again. A semblance of normalcy returned, but grief, in ever new and different forms, still held the family. What they could not know was that comfort would come, and in surprising ways. Hood traces her descent into grief and reveals how she found comfort and hope again-a journey to recovery that culminates with a newly adopted daughter. |

Fight or Die: The Vinny Paz Story
by
Caduto, Tommy Jon
"Fight or Die" tells the remarkable story of one of America's best-loved boxers, Vinny Paz. From the mean streets of Cranston, Rhode Island, Vinny rose to become a champion in two weight divisions over a twenty-year career. Here, his best friend captures all the pain and sweat of the boxing world, bound up with the rich traditions and the grit of Rhode Island's Italian-American community--and with the incredible odds this boxer overcame again and again. He lost much of his money in a Rhode Island banking scandal, but endured. Known for his no-holds-barred fighting style, Vinny almost died from dehydration after one fight. And then there was the car crash that broke his neck but not his resolve: Despite a doctor's prediction that he wouldn't fight again, he returned to the ring, the only life he ever knew. "" A moving testament to the power of the human spirit, "Fight or Die" recounts in arresting detail Vinny Paz's dramatic victories inside the ring--but it is his victory "outside" the ring that will inspire all readers. |
